"Don't touch him, I think he's dead."
One summer, back when I was selling Chevrolets, I went across the street to an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet for lunch with some of my coworkers, and stuffed myself. When we got back to the dealership, there was a family looking for a minivan. When they asked for someone to help them, all the other salespeople scattered. They were looking for a place to chill out and let their food settle. So I said, “Yes, I can help you.”
My customers wanted to test drive a special edition Chevrolet Astro van. After I came out of the dealership with the keys, we all got in the van, and I positioned myself in the back seat between the two kids. All I remember was telling the husband how to get out of the lot and around our three- to four-mile test drive route.
The next thing I heard faintly was, "Don't touch him, I think he's dead," as the kids were stepping around me to get out of the van. The husband had gone to the sales manager, who gathered the rest of the sales staff around the van.
I then heard them yell, “Hey Adcock ! Wake up!” And just at that moment I shot straight up out of my seat. As I got out of the van, I was red with embarrassment. I apologized all over myself to the customer. My heart rate must have been a million miles a minute. By that point, the customers were laughing with the sales staff and me about it, and yes, I did sell the van to the family that day. I made good friends with the customers who later referred other friends to me, and I sold them too! We formed a bond that none of us will never forget all because I bowed my head for just a moment, and poof, I had fallen fast asleep.
